The Unit's director, Professor Sally Macintyre, has been appointed to MRC Council from 2008-2012. She is among seven new appointments to Council announced today. Sally said of her appointment:

'I have been closely associated with MRC in many capacities over a long period, so it gives me great pleasure to be able to serve on its top level strategic and decision making body. MRC has a deservedly high reputation for its basic biomedical research, but it also has a  long and distinguished history of supporting social and public health sciences, so I am  particularly delighted to be able to contribute from a broad population health perspective'

Sally is Professor of Social and Public Health Science in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Glasgow, and honorary Director of the MRC Social and Public Health Sciences Unit in Glasgow.
