Institutional Social Science Capacity in NIMR, Mwanza, Tanzania

The greater importance of strengthening institutional, rather than individual, research capacity is now widely recognised. Following an assessment of the needs for social science research at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Mwanza, Tanzania, conducted by Pieter Remes in consultation with all local social scientists, the Unit funded a post-doctoral fellowship at NIMR from 2010 to 2013, 25% of which was devoted to strengthening social science research capacity at institutional level. Dr Joyce Wamoyi was appointed. This led, amongst other things, to: the co-ordination of social science research through a Social Science Committee; a social science seminar series; research skills training for staff across projects through monthly workshops and an annual week’s course; mentoring junior researchers and supporting their funding applications.
