Biography and Interests
Marcia graduated from the University of Glasgow with an MA in Sociology and subsequently pursued a PhD with the University's Department of Urban Studies. She took up her current research post with the MRC Social and Public Health Sciences Unit in 2006.
Marcia has led on a CSO-funded Cochrane review of trials evaluating the health impacts of welfare to work interventions on lone parents and their children, and acted as PI on a systematic review of qualitative studies of welfare to work for lone parents. She is currently collaborating on a funding bid for a mixed method study of the health impacts of Lone Parent Obligations in the UK.
Her research interests include: the pursuit of a robust evidence base to inform the development of effective public policy and the health and health inequalities impacts of complex social interventions which target ‘upstream’ determinants of health. This underlies her interest in the impact of welfare reform and of welfare to work interventions on specific groups such as lone parents.
